Recent study finds ChatGPT more effective than humans in giving personal advice

A recent study suggests that the latest version of ChatGPT with its GPT-4 model might offer better personal advice than many humans.

About a year ago, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, making a mark in the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Despite AI not being a new concept, ChatGPT’s launch took it to new levels of popularity. Users quickly explored ways to utilize AI chatbot in various aspects of their daily lives, from rewriting essays to solving math problems.

Now, a recent study suggests that the latest version of ChatGPT with its GPT-4 model might offer better personal advice than many humans. As per a study in Frontiers in Psychology, ChatGPT’s GPT-4 model excelled in providing personal advice compares to human columnists. Traditionally, personal advice was thought to require human empathy, but ChatGPT challenges this notion. About three-quarters of participants in the study found ChatGPT’s advice to be more balanced, complete, empathetic, and helpful than that of human columnists.

This signals a significant advancement in AI’s ability to comprehend and address human emotions, especially compared to its predecessor, GPT 3.5, which struggled with emotional needs.

Users can now seek different responses from ChatGPT and provide feedback, enhancing its capability to offer empathetic and socially appropriate advice. While the study does not propose replacing human advisors, it suggests that chatbots like ChatGPT could potentially augment therapy sessions. Furthermore, it implies that human advisors could benefit from AI advancements in empathetic communication.

An earlier study by researchers from Microsoft, William & Mary, and research centres across Asia explored whether large language models (LLMs), the foundation for generative AI tools like ChatGPT, could understand human emotions. The findings suggested that LLMs, including ChatGPT, may be capable of understanding and responding to emotional cues. Notably, ChatGPT’s responses improved significantly when prompted with emotional language, such as “This is very important to me” or “This plays a significant role in my career.”
