Trade Unions’ strike: normal life cripples in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Normal life was crippled in many places in Odisha including the State capital here today due to two-day nationwide strike called by various trade unions on Tuesday and Wednesday to protest against the “anti-labour” policies of Narendra Modi government.

Trade unions have staged rail and rasta roko (stop traffic and trains) protests in Balasore, Cuttack, Berhampur and here this morning.

Bus, autorickshaws and other public transport services stayed off the roads in major places in the stare. Business establishments, educational institutions and banks remained closed today.

The strike is being supported by All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA)and Labour Progressive Federation (LPF) among others.

Ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress also extended their support to the nationwide strike.

The strike does not have a unified agenda and trade unions will be pressing for their own unique demands-objection to labour laws, salary hike, recruitment and promotion to demand for higher MSP and others.
