Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday wrote a letter to Union Science & Technology Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan requesting him to sanction two more Doppler Weather Radars for Odisha.

The two new Doppler radars may be set up at Balasore and Sambalpur, which would help in tracking and real-time monitoring of weather, the Chief Minister wrote in his letter.

Currently, Odisha has two such radars at two disaster prone ports – Paradip and Gopalpur.

The Weather radar, also called weather surveillance radar (WSR) is a type of radar used to locate precipitation, calculate its motion and estimate its type (rain, snow, hail etc.).

Modern weather radars are mostly pulse-Doppler radars, capable of detecting the motion of rain droplets in addition to the intensity of the precipitation. Both types of data can be analyzed to determine the structure of storms and their potential to cause severe weather.
