Monkey menace leaves 39 injured in Odisha’s Balasore Balasore: At least 39 people have been injured due to monkey menace in the last five days at Raipur village under Soro police limits of Balasore district.

Some forest guards and Mankadia tribals, known for their expertise in catching and killing monkeys whose flesh they savour, have also been injured due to the attack of rogue monkeys.

While the seriously injured have been rushed to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, those with minor injuries have been admitted to Soro hospital.

The locals are so scared of the monkey attack that students have stopped going to schools. Villagers prefer to stay indoors even when need to go out on some emergency work.

“When I was going to the market, the monkeys came and suddenly attacked me so violently that I could not go ahead and jad to return home. Everyone in the village is so scared of the monkey menace that we are not able to step outside the house even to buy our daily needs,” said Sanatan Mahalik.

On being informed, the forest department has launched an operation to catch the monkeys. While a female monkey has been caught, a male monkey is still at large.

“We have started an operation to catch the monkeys with the help of the locals and the Mankadia tribals, who are experts in catching and killing monkeys. We have caught one female monkey and efforts are on to catch a hanu monkey,” Praful Kumar Mallick, Ranger, Balasore.
