Eleven Arrested For Looting Overturned Fruit Truck In Odisha

Sambalpur: Sadar police today arrested 11 persons in connection with the theft of fruits after a fruit-laden truck overturned near Padiabahal in the district on Saturday morning. Police said that the truck was carrying a fruit consignment worth Rs 10 lakh.

The truck transporting grapes and pomegranates to Calcutta from Maharashtra overturned after the driver lost control on the wheels. Later commuters gathered at the spot to rescue the driver and helper of the truck who sustained minor injuries.

“People went on stealing cartons of fruits after knowing that the truck contained fruits. The driver tried to prevent them but they continued with their act. The mob did not even take both the injured to the nearest hospital,” said a police official.

Few locals, however, assisted the driver of the truck to report the matter to the police. Police subsequently arrested 11 people and seized cartons of fruits.
