Couple burnt alive in Jajpur: 17 persons get life imprisonment

As many as 17 persons were today sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of a couple, who were burnt alive in Odisha’s Jajpur district in 2020.

Jajpur: As many as 17 persons were today sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of a couple, who were burnt alive in Odisha’s Jajpur district in 2020.

One Shaila Balumuch of Nimapalli village under the Kalinganagar police station limits of the district was asleep along with his wife Basanti Balumuch on July 7, 2020. However, a group of miscreants barged into the house and attacked the couple on suspension of sorcery. Besides, they torched their house, following which, Shaila and Basanti were burnt alive.

Kalinganagar police had launched an investigation into the matter after registering a case. In course of probe, cops arrested 17 people for their involvement in the incident and forwarded them to the court.

While conducting a hearing of the case today, Jajur Road Court Additional District and Sessions Judge Hrushikesha Acharya sentenced the accused persons to life imprisonment based on the statements of 20 eyewitnesses. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on them.
