Tathagata Satpathy quits electoral politics

Bhubaneswar: Senior BJD leader and four-time MP from Dhenkanal, Tathagata Satpathy on Tuesday announced his decision to quit politics.

Speaking to media persons, Satpathy said that he was quitting electoral politics for the wish of his son to put more focus on journalism.

The 63-year-old also added that political leaders who have won elections for four/five times should leave space for younger persons to carry forward the nation with a new direction.

Satpathy, son of former Odisha CM Nandini Satpathy, is the Editor of an Odia language newspaper- ‘Dharitri’ and the English daily –‘Orissa Post’.

Satapathy began his political career under Biju Patnaik and was elected from Dhenkanal Sadar assembly segment in 1990s. He was elected to Lok Sabha for the first time from Dhenkanal constituency in 1998 but suffered a defeat in 1999 Lok Sabha polls.

In 2000, Satpathy joined Bijoy Mohapatra’s Odisha Gana Parishad (OGP) and served as its secretary general. However, he quit OGP to join BJD a month before the 2004 Lok Sabha election. Since then he has never lost from Dhenkanal.
