Parrot smuggling racket busted in Rourkela, two arrested with 82 parrots

Forest officials today busted a parrot smuggling racket in Rourkela of Odisha’s Sundergarh district and arrested two persons with 72 parrots.

Rourkela: Forest officials today busted a parrot smuggling racket in Rourkela of Odisha’s Sundergarh district and arrested two persons with 72 parrots.

According to Rourkela DFO Jaswant Sethi, a special team of forest officials conducted a raid near the Indra Gandhi Park of the city and rescued 10 birds from their possessions, which they were planning to smuggle to Cuttack by a private bus.

During interrogation, the duo gave more details about the smuggling of wild birds, based on which, 72 Parrots were recovered, informed Sethi adding that a case has been registered against the accused persons under section 39 and 49 (A) under the Wildlife Protection Act.

The DFO further said that both of them will be forwarded to court today and further probe is underway.

Sources said that the accused used to trap the birds from Saranda forest on Odisha-Jharkhand border and transport them to different places like Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Raipur.
