Here are a few excerpts of the conversation with the legendary cricketer Kapil Dev in Bhubaneswar:

Q- When you had scored 175 runs you did not even have the time to pad up, what was going up in your mind at that time?

A- I was never a good student. If I had that good a memory, that I would remember what had happened 40 years back I would have become an Engineer or a Doctor. I do not remember clearly what had happened. I had lived that moment to the fullest. I believe in living in the present. I am not a storyteller.

Q- Madal Lal bowled to Vivian Richard in one over and gave away a huge number of runs. Even after that, he was given a chance to bowl on the same day, why?

A- I had done my work as a captain, the luck was in our favour that day.

Q- What is the major change that you have seen in modern cricket?

A- I think that modern cricket is in a very good state. This is the biggest thing ever. The team almost won the World Cup, which is a big thing. 30 years back, we could not even imagine this. The strong work and effort of the team is visible. The present Indian Team exudes confidence.

Q- You were the captain of the Indian cricket team for 24 long years, how did you manage to maintain unity among the senior players?

A- Even when I was the captain, I used to take regular advice from the senior players and I always believe in learning. One never stops learning and that is the spirit that I adopted.

Q- Three things that you would like to see in a captain?

A- One should not always look only at the result. You have to care for every player if you are the captain of a team. The captain needs to take efforts to bind the team together. Then only the goal of winning will be achieved.

Q- How would you describe your cricketing career?

A- I am a very forward looking person. My times are now over. I am happy to be alive and healthy. The present players are excellent, but they need to be shown the right direction.

Q- What would you like to say about the influence and use of technology in present day cricket?

A- Technology was there even when we were playing. It will be more advance with the advancement of years. It is and advantage for cricket.

Q- Which was the most memorable day in your cricketing career?

A- 99 percent people would think that I will say that it was the day we wo the World Cup in 1983 but for me it was different. For me it was the day when I played international cricket. To add to it, if I had not played cricket, I would not have been the captain and if I were not the captain then I could not have led the team to victory.

Q- Your advice for young cricketers?

A- Do not copy anyone. Play your own natural game.
