Lawyers led the freedom struggle of India: President Murmu on 10th Annual Convocation of NLUO

President remembered Dr. Ambedkar and appreciated his brilliance in law. She mentioned that it was because of him that she was standing here as a President.

Cuttack: President of India Droupadi Murmu today attended the 10th Annual Convocation of the National Law University, Odisha (NLUO) as the Chief Guest and appealed the students to take inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi and help the poor and weak in the society.

In her address, the President remembered Dr. Ambedkar and appreciated his brilliance in law. She mentioned that it was because of him that she was standing here as a President.

She also remarked that in Odisha, as well as India, it was the lawyers who led the freedom struggle. She mentioned luminaries like Utkala Gourav Madhusudhan Das, whose birth anniversary was celebrated as lawyers day in Odisha.

She quoted Mahatma Gandhi and also spoke about his flourishing legal practice in South Africa. She appealed the students to take inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi and help the poor and weak in the society.

President Murmu appreciated NLUO for adopting various villages in order to make them child friendly villages. She hoped that the students would do their duty of inculcating social awareness among the society.

She remarked that the mottos of the Supreme Court as well as that of NLUO were all related to justice. She mentioned that the Indian tradition of Dharma did not have any religion and it led to the creation of a good society. Further, Dharma in modern India worked in tandem with the Constitution of India.

The President also expressed her happiness on being informed that the girls of NLUO were awarded more degrees and also won as many gold medals.

Murmu expressed that it was important for the students to add to the legal profession as India was moving towards the Amritkal and was to be a developed nation soon. She finished her address by wishing the best of luck to all the students.

Other guests of honour of the occasion included Prof. Ganeshi Lal, the Governor of Odisha, Dr. Justice S. Muralidhar, the Chief Justice, Orissa High Court and Chancellor, NLUO, Jagannath Saraka, Cabinet Minister, Department of Law, Government of Odisha, and Justice Subhasis Talapatra, Judge, Orissa High Court. Sitting Judges of High Court of Orissa, Senior Advocates, Judicial Officers also graced the occasion.
