Kandhamal: Relatives who were crossing a swollen river with a dead body on their shoulders had a miraculous escape. Wading through neck deep water, the cable they were depended on snapped in Bagdi village of Kandhamal district.
After the death of Padmabati Pradhan, the relatives decided to conduct the final rites of the elderly women on the other side of the river using the cable. As there is no bridge over the Kalipenu river, the villagers always depend on the cable to cross the river.
So, they placed the body of Padmabati in the coffin and crossed the swollen river when the cable snapped and the relatives along with the coffin carrying dead body swept away, but they somehow managed to control themselves and swam back to the shore.
Not only Bagdi, but the locals of Badli, Drakeli and 90 other family members are depended on the swollen river.
The locals alleged that despite repeatedly raising the issue, the administrative officials have not taken any step for the construction of a bridge over the river.
