Cyclone Michaung: 8 deaths reported in Chennai

Atleast eight deaths have been reported in Chennai due to rain and inundation caused by Cyclone Michaung which is expected to make landfall

Chennai: Atleast eight deaths have been reported in Chennai, said the police officials. Also, more than 10 people were injured in the city due to rain and inundation caused by Cyclone Michaung which is expected to make landfall.

In Chennai, cars were swept away as floodwater flowed through the streets. The Chennai airport resumed operations after planes were grounded amid heavy rain and flooding of the runway due to Cyclone Michaung.  Chennai Airport Team has been advised to ensure proper upkeep of terminals, traffic management, availability of trollies and all other pax facilities.

The cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ which formed over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and is likely to cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam at 11 am today,  the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In view of the heavy rain lashing Andhra Pradesh under the influence of the severe cyclonic storm, the state government issued an alert for eight districts, Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema and Kakinada.

Koovam river rages as water from nearby lakes released into it due to heavy rainfall in the city in the wake of Severe Cyclonic Storm Michaung.
