Sushma Swaraj In New York For 73rd UN General Assembly Session

New York: Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has arrived in New York to represent the country at the 73rd General Assembly session of the United Nations. The minister will hold several bilateral and multilateral talks with global leaders in the session.

Swaraj will also hold talks with top UN officials besides taking part in crucial meetings and discussions throughout her week-long stay in the US.

Informing of Sushma Swaraj’s arrival for the General Assembly session, India’s permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin took to twitter and wrote- “Destination #UNGA73 India’s External Affairs Minister @SushmaSwaraj arrives in New York for High Level Segment of @UN”

MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar also tweeted – Setting the stage for a week of hectic diplomacy! EAM @SushmaSwaraj arrives in New York to attend the 73rd Session of the #UnitedNations General Assembly and participate in several bilateral, plurilateral and multilateral meetings.

Worth mentioning, after Pakistani PM Imran Khan’s proposal to hold peace talks with India, Sushma Swaraj was supposed to meet Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi during the Assembly session in New York. However, India called off the meeting in protest of brutal killing of three policemen in Kashmir and cross border tensions along the LoC and accused Pak of glorifying terrorism.

Pakistani PM expressed disappointment at this move of New Delhi and termed it as India’s ‘arrogance’. In a tweet, Khan wrote- “Disappointed at the arrogant & negative response by India to my call for resumption of the peace dialogue. However, all my life I have come across small men occupying big offices who do not have the vision to see the larger picture.”

Moreover, leaders from 193 UN member states will be attending the General Assembly Session. The General Debate is scheduled to start on September 25.
