Cuttack SCB hospital performs Odisha’s first haploidentical bone marrow transplant

The Cuttack-based Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) has successfully performed Odisha’s first haploidentical bone marrow transplant on a patient.

Cuttack: The Cuttack-based Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) has successfully performed Odisha’s first haploidentical bone marrow transplant on a patient.

Doctors of the premier hospital of the State performed the haploidentical bone marrow transplant on Subhrashu Sahu, a native of Kantabani village in Khurda district, after his brother donated the organ, said sources adding that the health condition of both the patient and donor are stable.

Subhrashu had recovered in 2019 after being diagnosed with blood cancer in 2016. However, disease relapsed later. Due to which, the doctors decided to transplant his bone marrow.

As per reports, the private hospitals charge around Rs 15 to Rs 20 lakh for the haploidentical bone marrow transplantation. However, Subhrashu’s surgery was done free of cost and the State government will bear the expenditure.
