Cops-lawyers face-off in Cuttack: PCR van torched

Cuttack: The ongoing face-off between police and lawyers took an ugly turn today after some agitating lawyers allegedly set ablaze a PCR van here this afternoon.

The police vehicle was torched at Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) office.

The lawyers affiliated to the Orissa High Court Bar Association staged a demonstration protesting alleged assault on a lawyer by the Chauliaganj cops yesterday near Nua Bazaar bridge. They also had boycotted the court proceedings.

The lawyers demanded stringent action against the accused policemen. They will also abstain from the court work tomorrow as a mark of protest.

According to sources, the bar association will hold another meeting tomorrow at 1.30 PM where the lawyers will decide the next course of action.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty said that the incident involving police and a lawyer under Chauliaganj PS is “unfortunate”. Three separate cases have been registered and an Addl DCP will probe the cases impartially, he added.
