5 of family killed as Bolero plunges into roadside ‘nullah’ near Puri

Puri: In a shocking road mishap last night, at least five persons including woman and two minors were killed after a SUV they were traveling in suffered an overturn and plunged into a roadside nullah near Sukala Chhak on Nua Jagannath Sadak here.

The deceased have been identified as K Krishna (50), Jagdish (40), Khyamabati (40), Abnan (7), Yamabati (5). All the victims are residents of Patrapur in Ganjam district.

Police said, at least 12 persons of a family were returning home after performing ‘Asthi Bisarjan’ (immersion of ashes) in Puri sea when the tragedy struck late in the night. At Sukala Chhak, close to Bhanilipur under Sakhigopal police limits driver of the SUV, a Mahindra Bolero lost control over the wheels causing it to skid off the road and plunged into a nearby nullah. The Bolero overturned and submerged with only wheels seen on the surface of the water following the crash.

While five persons died on the spot, Chandanpur Police reached the spot and rescued seven others to Chandanpur CHC later in the night. The injured were later shifted to Puri DHH in critical condition.

Police have rushed the bodies for autopsy and are trying to pull the car from the pond.
