14 test positive for Scrub Typhus in Sundargarh of Odisha, total rises to 244

14 people tested positive for Scrub Typhus in the last 48 hours in Odisha's Sundargarh. The total number of cases currently stands at 244.

Sundargarh: Sundargarh continues to remain panic stricken as cases of Scrub typhus continue to rise. As per the latest reports from reliable sources, 14 people have tested positive for Scrub Typhus in the last 48 hours.

86 samples were reportedly sent for testing, out of which 14 tested positive. This has taken the total number of Scrub Typhus cases to 244 in Sundargarh, said reliable reports.

So far, only one death due to scrub typhus has been reported in Sundargarh. Meanwhile, five deaths have been reported in Bargarh district of Odisha, said reliable sources.

Similarly, a total of 337 scrub typhus patients have been identified in Balangir district in the last two months. It is the highest in the state. Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Kuber Chandra Mahant informed that 172 cases have been detected in August and 165 cases in September. He said that it is a rainy season disease and was already seen previously.

In order to control Scrub Typhus, the health department have taken several measures like medicines and testing facilities. The health authorities have engaged ASHA and Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife (ANM) volunteers to spread awareness about the disease among the people.

Scrub typhus spreads through bites of infected chiggers (larval mites). The mites usually come in contact with humans in farmland, forests and village ponds.
