10 cows, truck helper killed as cattle-laden vehicle overturns in CuttackCuttack: A cattle-laden truck overturned near Madhupatna square here killing more than 10 cows and the helper of the vehicle on Saturday.

The driver of the ill-fated truck, who was severely injured in the accident, has been admitted to a nearby hospital. Around ten more cows sustained critical injuries and are being attended to by veterinary doctors.

According to reports, a truck bearing registration number OR-09K-9947 was on its way towards Chandikhole with around 50 cows when it met with an accident near Madhupatna square on the National Highway after the driver of the vehicle lost control over the wheels of the truck.

Vehicular movement was severely affected on the route following the road mishap.

On being informed, Madhupatna, Purighat and Sadar police rushed to the site and carried out a rescue operation along with some locals and commuters. Some of the officials of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) also rushed to the spot and helped in the rescue operation.

The body of the deceased helper, who is yet to be identified, has been sent to the hospital for postmortem. The dead cows will be autopsied before being buried, said sources.

Police have begun an investigation into the incident and are likely to grill the driver of the vehicle to extract more information about the accident.
