Forest officials injured after poachers open fire in Odisha’s Balasore, accused arrested

Balasore: Two members of anti-poaching squad were critically injured after two poachers opened fire on them in Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary under Odisha’s Balasore district. The two accused has been arrested following the incident.

The two accused have been identified as Guna Sing, a resident of Kantabania under Nilgiri police limits of the district, and Sania Sing of Siadimala of the district.

According to sources, the incident occurred during the course of patrolling on Tuesday. Reportedly, the forest guard, Panchalingeswar beat together with anti-poaching squad were patrolling in the area when they nabbed two poachers.

They chased the poachers and detained them at Dhansua Chaturi inside the Sanctuary. However, during the process both the poachers open fired on the forest personnel from the country made guns being carried by them and two anti-poaching squad.

The injured personnel have been identified as Khitish Parida and Biranchi Jena. They are presently undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.

Further investigation into the matter is underway. More details are awaited.

Earlier, a poacher was arrested with a leopard skin in Odisha’s Kandhamal district. The poacher was identified as Belarsen Kanhar, the son of Abhimanyu Kanhar of Kurkanapali village under Firingia police station of the district.

On the basis of reliable information, a team of Special Task Force (STF) conducted raid with the help of Kandhamal Police last night on the side of SH-1 near Manipadar village of the district regarding dealing/possession of wildlife products by wildlife criminals and arrested Belarsen.

During the search, one leopard skin, cash of Rs 5500 along with other incriminating materials were recovered from the possession of Belarsen. As the accused person could not produce any authority in support of possession of such Leopard Skin, he was apprehended.
