Onion prices surge to Rs 50 in Odisha as Tomato crop faces setback

The price of onions has increased to Rs 50 per kilogram in Odisha as the tomato crop faces challenges leaving consumers grappling over costs.

Bhubaneswar: The price of onions in Odisha has skyrocketed, as the tomato crop faces challenges, leaving consumers grappling with the effects of rising food costs. Onions have witnessed a significant surge in prices, reaching Rs 50 per kilogram in the state’s Khurda market.

Just two weeks ago, the price of onions stood in the range of Rs 30 to Rs 35 per kilogram. However, the recent increase has created concerns for households already struggling with the rising cost of living.

This sudden surge in onion prices is primarily attributed to a reduction in onion production. To put the situation into perspective, the cost of a kilogram of onions has now increased by Rs 10, going from Rs 40 to 50.

Local vendors and traders have expressed their concerns over the escalating prices of onions, citing challenges in sourcing the essential vegetable due to the decreased yield.

The situation becomes even more critical in light of the fact that the onion is a fundamental ingredient in Indian cooking, and its affordability is integral to the diets of millions. Residents are now voicing their apprehension about managing their household budgets with these escalating food prices.

On a national level, the main onion-producing state, Maharashtra, is witnessing a substantial increase in onion prices. In the Pimpalgaon market, the price of onions per quintal has surged from Rs 2500 to Rs 5000 over the past month.
