In a sad piece of news, Odisha’s first haploidentical bone marrow transplant patient has breathed his last in Cuttack SCB hospital. 

Cuttack: In a sad piece of news, Odisha’s first haploidentical bone marrow transplant patient has breathed his last in Cuttack SCB hospital, said reliable reports in this regard.

The Cuttack-based Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) had successfully performed Odisha’s first haploidentical bone marrow transplant on a patient on January 9.

Doctors of the premier hospital of the State had performed the haploidentical bone marrow transplant on Subhrashu Sahu, a native of Kantabanji village in Khurda district, after his brother donated the bone marrow, said sources adding that the health condition of both the patient and donor are stable.

Subhrashu had recovered in 2019 after being diagnosed with blood cancer in 2016. However, the  disease later relapsed. Due to which, the doctors decided to transplant his bone marrow.

As per reports, the private hospitals charge around Rs. 15 to Rs 20 lakh for the haploidentical bone marrow transplantation. However, Subhrashu’s surgery was done free of cost and the State government bore the expenditure. But, the death of Subhrashu has led to an atmosphere of sadness in his family and in the hospital.
