Bhubaneswar: Odisha has seen a record number of road accidents in five years. Reports say 5,467 persons died in road accidents in 2022, whereas in 2019 as many as 5,333 deaths were reported.

A total of 25,934 people died due to road accident in Odisha between 2018 and 2022, informed Transport Minister Tukuni Sahoo while speaking in the state assembly on November 23 during the Winter Session.

The minister further said that from 2019 to till date, the state government has awarded Rs 79.12 crore as compensation to the injured persons and kin of deceased in road accidents.

In a tragic and heart-rending incident, as many as eight people were killed and seven others were injured after a van crashed into a truck on Friday.

The van was carrying 19 passengers said reports. It crashed into a truck on NH 20 near Balijodi in Anandpur. The passengers were on their way to Maa Tarini Temple in Ghatagaon of Keonjhar.

It is worth mentioning that, seven people died on the spot while one other lost his life in the hospital. All the deceased persons belong to Podamari village of Digapahandi.

Eyewitnesses report that, the van crashed into a stationary truck parked on the side of the road just three kilometers away from the Tarini temple.
