Odisha: Security beefed up in Maoist-infested areas for 2019 elections

Bhubaneswar: Odisha DGP in-charge Bijay Kumar Sharma on Tuesday informed that the state police have tightened security arrangements in the Maoist-infested areas of the state ahead of the ensuing 2019 elections to provide necessary protection to all the voters.

Sharma’s announcement came in the wake of Maoist attack on a BJP convoy in Chhattisgarh earlier today.  A BJP MLA named Bheema Mandavi was killed along with four other security personnel in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast which was carried out by the red rebels.

Besides, ever since the declaration of poll dates, the Maoists in Odisha have been trying to dissuade voters from participating in the elections and urging people to boycott the polls.

Several anti-poll posters and banners have been surfacing in Maoist-hit districts like Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Rayagada.

Sharma also informed that security personnel from paramilitary units like the CRPF and Border Security Force will also be deployed at the sensitive areas to maintain law and order during the voting on April 11.
