Odisha panchayat election: Man contests against wife for Sarapanch post

With the Odisha panchayat election at hand, the political uproar has intensified across the State. From tea stalls to paan shops and from market to public places, people from different walks of life are seen discussing about it. Several interesting facts have come to the fore during this panchayat election time. In some places, it is seen that several members from the same families are contesting the panchayat election from different political parties. In some places also it is seen that two brothers are fighting the election against each other. One such amusing news is being reported from the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, where a man is the contender against his wife.

One Manaranjan Taria is fighting the panchayat election against his wife Minu Chatar for the Sarapanch post of TilokutI Panchayat under Rarua Block of the Mayurbhanj district. It is to be noted here that Minu is the sitting Sarapanch of TilokutI Panchayat.

While Manaranjan said that he is fighting the election out of his interestest, Minu said that the local people wanted her to stand as a candidate once again. However, who will win the Sarapanch seat will be known only after the declaration of results.

Not only this, Minu’s sister-in-law Annapurna Chattar is also contesting the three-tier election as Zilla Parishad candidate from Zone No-41 of Jashipur Block. The Congress party has fielded her.

Notably, over 2.79 crore voters will exercise their franchise to elect 91,913 ward members, 6,794 Sarpanches, 6,793 Panchayat Samiti members, and 853 Zilla Parishad members during this Panchayat polls in Odisha which will be held in five phases on February 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24. The votes will be counted and results will be declared on February 26, 27, and 28.
