Odisha: Final rites of Khallikote Queen V. Sugnana Kumari Deo to be held today

Brahmapur: The last rites of Queen of Khallikote and veteran BJD leader V Sugnana Kumari Deo will take place today. Her last rites will be performed today at the Khallikote based royal crematorium, said reliable reports in this regard.

People will be able to pay their final respects till today afternoon.

The body of V Sugnana Kumari Deo arrived in Bhubaneswar yesterday, via an airplane. During the evening hours, the body landed at the Biju Patnaik International Airport from Chennai. From there, it was taken to the Sankha Bhawan in Bhubaneswar. Therein, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik along with party leaders and workers paid their tributes.

Later, the body was taken to Odisha assembly where the former 10-time MLA was given guard of honour. Speaker Pramila Mallick and legislators of different parties paid their tributes. The body was then taken to Khallikote from the Odisha Assembly.

It is to be noted here that Deo died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Chennai at the age of 87.

The queen of the Khallikote and veteran Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader, V Sugnana Kumari Deo, passed away on Saturday in Chennai.

First elected to Odisha Legislative Assembly in 1963, she was one among the Pro-tem speaker of the 15th Odisha assembly. She has won a total of 10 times in her political career from Khallikote and Kabisuryanagar constituencies.

Sugnana Kumari had joined politics from the time of Biju Patnaik and was a respected figure in Ganjam politics. She had a unique identity not only as a leader but also as a social worker. Even though she was a 10-time legislator, she never aspired for the post of minister.

Sugnana Kumari Deo belonged to the royal family of Khallikote and is the daughter-in-law of Raja Ramchandra Mardaja Deo.
