New Delhi: In a major development, the Supreme Court (SC) of India on Monday directed the Union government to issue a notification on the formation of a Tribunal for resolution of the dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh by November 19, 2017.
The Government of Odisha as well as three prominent political parties in the state – the ruling BJD, Opposition Congress and BJP – have been demanding the formation of a tribunal in this regard for a long time.
Odisha government has been claiming that Chhattisgarh is constructing dams and barrages upstream, affecting the flow of water from Mahanadi river, the “lifeline” of Odisha, into its territory.
All three parties – BJD, BJP and Congress – have welcomed the apex court’s direction in this regard.
