Dusserha 2023: Odisha to witness heavy rain on October 23, 24

IMD has issued a weather warning for Odisha as a cyclonic circulation system has formed in the South-eastern part of Bay of Bengal.

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for Odisha as a cyclonic circulation system has formed in the South-eastern part of Bay of Bengal. This development poses a significant threat to the observance of Durga Puja in the region.

According to the latest bulletin from the IMD, a cyclonic circulation in the lower tropospheric levels has been detected over the southeast Bay of Bengal. This system is predicted to move northwestwards, possibly leading to the formation of a low-pressure area over the central parts of the Bay of Bengal around October 20.

The impending onset of heavy to very heavy rainfall due to this weather disturbance is causing great concern for the Durga Puja celebrations in Odisha. Reports from the regional Meteorological (MeT) office suggest possible disruptions in worship and darshan activities during the festival.

Notably, this cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal is not an isolated incident. Another cyclone has already formed in the Bay of Bengal, and there is an expectation of yet another cyclone forming in the eastern part of the Bay. The forecasted trajectory indicates that any low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal may gradually move towards Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Simultaneously, within the next 24 hours, the Arabian Sea may also witness the formation of a low-pressure area. Multiple weather models are indicating favorable conditions for the development of low pressure in the southeastern Arabian Sea, with the potential for further intensification into a cyclone. If this scenario unfolds, the cyclonic storm will be named ‘Tez.’
