Cyclonic circulation in Bay of Bengal sparks rain concerns for Odisha

IMD has issued a warning of potential rainfall in Odisha due to a cyclonic circulation that formed over the Bay of Bengal on October 18.

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of potential rainfall in Odisha due to a cyclonic circulation that formed over the Bay of Bengal on October 18, 2023.

According to the latest bulletin from the IMD, a cyclonic circulation in the lower tropospheric levels was detected over the southeast Bay of Bengal on October 18. This system is expected to move northwestwards, and as a result, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the central parts of the Bay of Bengal around October 20.

The onset of this rain is causing concern for the observance of Durga Puja in Odisha, with reports from the regional Meteorological (MeT) office indicating possible disruptions in worship and darshan.

As per the latest weather bulletin, the festivities during Durga Puja may be dampened due to the potential formation of a low-pressure system, which could lead to heavy to very heavy rainfall.

In addition to the cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal, another cyclone has formed in the southwest Bay of Bengal, and there is an expectation of another cyclone forming in the eastern part of the Bay. The trajectory suggests that any low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal may gradually move towards Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Simultaneously, within the next 24 hours, the Arabian Sea may also see the formation of a low-pressure area. Various weather models are indicating favorable conditions for the development of low pressure in the southeastern Arabian Sea, which may further intensify into a cyclone. If it does transform into a cyclonic storm, it will be named ‘Tez.’

Residents of Odisha and surrounding areas are urged to stay updated with the latest weather advisories and take necessary precautions in light of the impending rainfall and weather developments.
