13-year-old bike racer Shreyas Hareesh dies in Chennai racing event
The 13-year-old bike racer known as The Bengaluru Kid lost his life during the National Motorcycle Racing Championship in Chennai.
Chennai: In a heartbreaking incident, Copparam Shreyas Hareesh, a talented 13-year-old bike racer known as ‘The Bengaluru Kid,’ lost his life during the National Motorcycle Racing Championship (NMRC) at Chennai’s Irungattukottai on Saturday.
Shreyas had achieved remarkable success in the sport, becoming the first Indian to reach the World Championship final in two-wheeler racing held in Spain back in May. However, during the third round of the race in Chennai, tragedy struck when Shreyas skidded and his helmet came off, leaving him vulnerable. Another rider following closely behind could not avoid the collision, leading to a fatal head injury.
Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to the hospital, young Shreyas was declared dead upon arrival.
Following this devastating loss, the Madras Motor Sports Club decided to cancel the remaining races scheduled over the weekend as a mark of respect and in light of the solemn circumstances.
Shreyas had already proven himself as a prodigious talent in the racing world. He had a firm grip over his 200cc motorbike and was celebrated for his control and skill.
Earlier this year, he etched his name in history by securing a spot in the World Championship final during the FIM Mini-GP World Championship in Spain. His performances in Spain showcased his immense potential, finishing 5th and 4th in the first and subsequent second races, respectively.
Shreyas’ journey in the racing world began in India’s FIM Mini-GP, where he clinched the championship in 2022. This success led him to participate in the National Championship, earning podium finishes and catching the attention of TVS. The renowned company picked him up for the rookie cup, providing him with training and a TVS bike for his races.
His early success continued as he won the first four races in the rookie category and progressed to participate in the pro-stock 165cc open, further solidifying his status as one of the country’s potential racing stars.
