Puri: Cyclone Fani has not only wreaked havoc on the land but also it has led to opening of four new mouths (meeting point with sea) at Chilika lake. Forest department has started an assessment to evaluate the effect of the new mouths on the biodiversity of the largest brackish lake in Asia.
Chief Executive Officer of Chilika Development Authority (CDA), the regulatory body for the lake, Susanta Nanda informed the new development on his twitter handle. Currently the lake, spread over 1100 square kilometers in three districts of Khordha, Puri and Ganjam has two active mouths.
#Chilika lagoon had only 2 active mouths – the point where it meets the sea- before #cycloneFANI. 4 new mouths have opened due to wave energy with high tidal prism & saline ingress to de lake. Effects on bio diversity being assessed. Yesterday’s video from new mouth. pic.twitter.com/8voZuTdPFb
