New Delhi: In the modern day society, Smartphones have become an important part of our lives. Starting from day-to-day communication, entertainment, photography or banking, a smartphone caters every need of a person. In this case if someone loses his device, the incident will be no less than a tragedy.

However, if a person is an android smartphone user he might be able to trace his device if certain features of his phone are turned on. Tech giant Google which offers Android Operating System has some tricks up in its sleeve that can help a user. Users can not only trace their device but also lock and erase data on their device.

The steps offered by Google are simple and can be handy at a situation if you misplace your device and are unable to find it. However, there are certain pre-requisites to find, lock or erase data on an android device. The phone must be turned on, signed in with a Google account and location turned on. Additionally the device needs to be connected to internet either through mobile date or Wi-Fi. The users should also have his ‘Find My Device’ setting turned on.

If all the above mentioned pre-requisites are met by the user, the user can follow these steps:

  1. Open android.com/find on a computer or tablet or other device. Then sign in to the Google account with which the lost smartphone was earlier signed in. Once signed in user can check battery life and last online status of the device.
  2. An approximate location of the device will be shown by Google. If the approximate location is unknown, then Google will show the last known location.
  3. If the android device is located nearby, the user can go to the location and then select the Play Sound option. Enabling this option makes the phone ring non-stop for few minutes.
  4. If user wishes to lock the screen he can select the Secure Device option. Enabling the option will immediately lock the device and sign out of your Google account. The user can also send a message on the phone which will be displayed on the main screen. The message will contain your contact mobile number. If any person finds the phone he can contact the user on the particular mobile number.
  5. However, if the user needs to erase the data on the lost device, he can select Erase Device option. Selecting the option will erase all contents in the phone. This option needs to be enabled only when the above mentioned steps do not work, as all data in the device will be deleted permanently.
