Be alert iPhone users! Hackers sending malware via iMessages to spy on users

Hackers have found a new way to gain access to iPhones. The cybercriminals are reportedly using a new kind of malicious software that can take control of the device and spy on users, warned the cybersecurity experts.

Kaspersky, a cybersecurity company, has revealed that the ongoing attack on iOS devices is called ‘Operation Triangulation’. It sends malware through iMessage without any interaction from the user. After the malware is installed on the device, it gains complete control and allows the attacker to secretly monitor the user’s activities.

The cybersecurity company discovered this malware while monitoring their own Wi-Fi network, where they found that many of their employees iPhones have been hacked by attackers.

Here’s how the attack works

The victim receives an iMessage with an attachment. When they open the message, a vulnerability in the device is triggered, allowing the attacker to take control of it. Once the attacker has control, the message is deleted automatically.

The malware also quietly sends private information from the infected device to remote servers. This includes things like recorded audio from the device’s microphone, photos from messaging apps, and even the device’s location. However, the attackers can only access data stored on the infected device. There is no evidence to suggest that Kaspersky was specifically targeted in this attack.

To protect against these kinds of attacks, businesses need to prioritize the security of their systems. This includes educating and raising awareness among employees about potential threats. It’s also important to provide employees with the latest information about threats and the tools they need to defend against them. Kaspersky is continuing its investigation into Operation Triangulation and plans to share more details soon. They believe that there may be other targets of this spying operation beyond their own company.

To avoid falling victim to targeted attacks like this, it’s crucial to keep third-party software up to date. Regularly updating software can help protect against known vulnerabilities that attackers may try to exploit.
