Apple clamshell-style foldable iPhone and iPad prototypes tipped to be in the works

Apple is reportedly working on two iPhone prototypes that fold horizontally that will compete with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. However, there is no hints that the foldable phones will be unveiled in the coming future.

According to reports, the Cupertino-based tech giant is developing prototypes of at least two clamshell-style foldable iPhone models. The report have revealed that the foldable iPhone will old horizontally and they are currently in the early development stage. Moreover, they might not enter for mass production in 2024 or 2025.

The Apple foldable iPhones might have a displays on the outside of the device when it was closed. But, the technology for this has not been perfected yet as the engineers reportedly struggled with the design as it can break easily.

Additionally, the company’s engineers want to develop a foldable that’s “as thin as current iPhone models,” but battery sizes and display components add to the thickness of the device, as per the report. Apple might source the components for the two foldable iPhone models from Asia.

Apart from the foldable iPhones, Apple is also working on a foldable iPad. It is expected to feature the same size as the current generation iPad Mini with an 8-inch display. For the folding iPad, the engineers at Apple are trying on ways to minimize the crease at the center of the display. For which, a hinge is being developed that will allow the display to lie flat when unfolded.

However, Apple has not announced any plans regarding the launch of foldable iPhone or iPad yet. Currently, brands like Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo have launched foldable smartphones. Upon launch, the Apple clamshell iPhone will rival Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, Oppo Find N3 Flip, and Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G.

Apple’s first mixed reality headset, the Vision Pro, was made available in the US earlier this month.
