Woman lecturer found hanging in college hostel, family fears murder

Rairangpur: Mystery shrouded the death of a woman lecturer of Rairangpur College whose body was found hanging inside her hostel room in the institution last night.

The deceased identified as Rukmini Mandal, a resident of Jharapokharia village of Mayurbhanj district and a contractual physics lecturer of the college.

As per the college authorities, Rukmini locked her up inside Room No.8 of the women’s hostel of the college at around 8.30 pm in the night and didn’t open despite repeated knocking by other inmates and the matron.

After breaking open the door the hostel authorities found Rukmini hanging to the ceiling fan and called up Rairangpur Town Police which reached the spot immediately and started an investigation.

While the incident is being seen as a case of suicide the family members of the deceased have alleged that she has been murdered.

Rukmini had been raped by a distant relative during her visit to Keonjhar a few months back. Though she lodged a case in connection with the incident on October 30, police made an inordinate delay in taking action against the accused, her family claimed.

In addition, the accused had started threatening her to make the video recording of the rape viral on the Internet which had caused mental stress to her and ultimately forced to commit suicide, they added.

Meanwhile, Mayurbhanj SP has suspended Jharpokharia police IIC Deepak Swain for dereliction of duty in the case and the accused has been detained.
