Wild elephant herd wreaks havoc in Karanjia of Mayurbhanj

Baripada: With no respite in sight from the incidents of elephant incursion in the State, a herd of at least 22 wild elephants wreaked havoc in Sukruli under Karanjia Forest Range of Mayurbhanj district and caused large scale crop damage today.

The herd comprising of elephants of different age groups had been separated from a larger herd of 54 elephants which had sneaked into at least four blocks of Karanjia Sub Division a few days back in search of food and remained there leaving people in a state of panic.

Some locals who spotted two separate herds in Manoharpur forest and Kujiam forest called up forest officials early this morning after which the incident came to light.

Forest officials have rushed to the spot and are trying to drive away the pachyderms from forests located near the villages to prevent any loss to property or lives.
