Venkaiah Naidu sworn in as 13th Vice President of India

Vice President of IndiaNew Delhi: Former Union Minister Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu on Friday took oath as the 13th Vice President of India. He was administered the oath of office by President Ramnath Kovind at a special function at Rashtrapati Bhavan here.

Outgoing Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Governors and Chief Ministers of various States, Union Ministers and Members of Parliament across party lines were present on the occasion.

Before proceeding to the Rashtrapati Bhavan, 68 year old Naidu paid tributes to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. He also paid tributes to Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in the national capital.

After the swearing in ceremony, Naidu reached Parliament House and took charge as Chairman of Rajya Sabha. He also chaired the proceedings of the Upper House today.

Naidu was elected as the Vice President on 5th of this month defeating opposition candidate Gopal Krishna Gandhi.

With Naidu becoming the Vice President, BJP leaders now occupy the top four constitutional posts of the country for the first time in the history of Indian democracy. President Ramnath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan all are from BJP.

Naidu was born on 1st July, 1949 at Chavatapalem in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.  During his three decade long public life, he has held several positions including Union minister during the AB Vajpayee and Narendra Modi governments and BJP President from 2002 to 2004.

In the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government, Naidu was the Union Cabinet Minister for Rural Development. In the present Narendra Modi Government, he served as the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Parliamentary Affairs and Information and Broadcasting before being nominated for the Vice President’s post.
