Price Of Tomato Skyrockets In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The tomato prices have skyrocketed to Rs 60 – Rs 70 per kg, a nearly three-fold jump from last week. The rate was around Rs 25 to 30 a few days back in different parts of the State.

Recently, the rise in prices of the kitchen staple is pinching the pockets of citizens. The vendors have said that the short supply due to a lack of local production has led to the sharp rise in prices. They are further worried that the price of tomatoes may also cross the Rs 100 mark soon.

The vendors of Odisha have expressed that the local production of tomatoes is not adequate to meet the demand and the State depends on states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and for supply.

Notably, the people in Odisha faced a lot of inconvenience following the rise in the prices of lemons last month. The retail prices of lemons have nearly doubled in Odisha markets during the first week of April.

The State has been the 6 largest producer of lemons in the country for the last four consecutive years.
