Passenger Accuses BPIA Customs Official Of Taking Bribe

Bhubaneswar: A passenger at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here has accused a customs official of demanding a bribe of Rs 5,000.

The passenger named Kuppusamy Nagarajan, who arrived from Bangkok on flight No FD 112 on Tuesday night, alleged that the customs official asked him to pay a bribe of Rs 5,000 for carrying gold even after he produced the requisite documents.

The passenger has further alleged that he was not issued a receipt by the official for the Rs 5,000 paid as customs duty for the gold.

After leaving the airport terminal, Nagarajan narrated the entire episode to his friends who gathered near the arrival gate and started threatening the customs officials with a police complaint, compelling them to return the money to the passenger.

Based on the passenger’s complaint, the GST Additional Commissioner has ordered a probe into the matter.
