Odisha records 42 sunstroke deaths in 2 months

Bhubaneswar: Odisha, which is reeling under severe heat wave condition even after the arrival of south-west monsoon, has recorded 42 alleged sunstroke deaths in the last two months. However, only seven sunstroke deaths have been confirmed.

Informing about this Deputy Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) P.R. Mohapatra today said, “Earlier, 35 deaths due to sunstroke was reported. Hence, Collectors were asked for inquiry. Out of it, 7 sunstroke deaths have been confirmed. Rest still being inquired into. As PM (post mortem) report is compulsory to ascertain the sunstroke deaths, there is a delay in the confirmed reports of total sunstroke death toll.”

“Meanwhile, 7 fresh sunstroke death reports have been received due to the prevailing heat wave condition for the last seven days. Hence, including these fresh figure, total death toll report is 42 out of which 7 has been confirmed.

On the other hand, the state Labour Minister Sushant Singh asked labourers not to be engaged in outdoor work between 11 AM and 3.30 PM till 30 June due to intense heat wave.
