Malkangiri: In a ghastly incident, a man set his own mother alive at MPV-55 village under Motu Police limits of the Maoist affected district this evening.
While the deceased has been identified as Gita Mandal (55), the accused has been identified as Tapas Mandal (30).
According to sources, both Gita and Tapas had a minor altercation over some family issues this evening, irate over which the latter beat the former black and blue and when she collapsed on the road Tapas torched her alive with the paddy straws. Later, he fled the spot before anyone could notice him.
On being informed by the locals, Motu police arrived at the spot and began an investigation into the matter. Besides, they have launched a search operation to trace and arrest the Tapas.
Gita’s body, meanwhile, has been sent to the hospital for postmortem.
