Man Arrested In Odisha For Cheating Rs 69 Lakh On Pretext Of MBBS Admission

Bhubaneswar: Crime Branch today arrested a 34 year old for allegedly cheating Rs 69 lakh on pretext of providing an MBBS seat in a city based private medical college.

The accused has been identified as Soumyakanta Mohanty, a resident of Nimapara in Puri district.

Police said that the accused had cheated an associate professor working in Silchar Medical College in Assam. “The victim came in contact with the victim in July 2015 during his visit to the Bhubaneswar based medical college for an MBBS seat for his daughter. The accused took Rs 69 lakh in phase wise manner but failed to ensure a seat,” said a police official.

The victim then demanded to return the money and later lodged a formal complaint with the Crime Branch in June this year. Police said that they are also trying to nab another accused involved in the fraud.

“ Mohanty is also involved in similar frauds in Bengaluru and other parts of Odisha. He was nabbed from Bhubaneswar. He will be forwarded to the court today,” added the police official.
