Imported cigarettes worth Rs 12 lakh seized from Bhubaneswar airport, 2 detained

Bhubaneswar: Foiling an attempt of illegal transportation of goods across the international border, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials today seized around 400 packets of imported cigarettes from two passengers at Bhubaneswar airport.

Acting upon a tip-off on the illegal consignment of foreign-made cigarettes which were being transported to Kolkata from Malaysia’s Kula Lumpur the DRI officials detained at least two Air Asia passengers this morning at Biju Patnaik International Airport. During their search, the cigarette packs without the mandatory ‘statutory warning’ were found and got seized.

The seized consignment which would cost around Rs 12 lakh was being carried to Kolkata from Kuala Lumpur, informed the officials without disclosing the identity of the accused duo who are said to be Kolkata-based businessmen.

Further investigation is underway in the case.
