New Delhi: On the first day of the Winter Session of Parliament today, the Union Cabinet approved proposal to introduce the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017, to make instant triple talaq void and illegal.

Addressing media persons here, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, the bill is designed to provide a shield for Muslim women.

The proposed law would only be applicable on instant triple talaq or ‘talaq-e-biddat’ and it would give power to the victim to approach a magistrate seeking “subsistence allowance” for herself and minor children, the Law Minister added.

As per the provisions of the draft bill, a husband who resorts to instant triple talaq can be jailed up to three years and be fined.

Last month, the Union government had written to all the States for their comments as it plans to introduce the Bill in current session of Parliament.
