Cyclone Mocha likely to form over Bay of Bengal on May 9: IMD

IMD has predicted that there is a possibility of the formation of a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) around May 9. 

Bhubaneswar: The Indian Meteorological Centre has predicted that there is a possibility of the formation of a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) around May 9.

IMD has forecasted that a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal around May 06, 2023. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around May 07, 2023. It is likely to concentrate into a depression over the Southeast Bay of Bengal on May 08, 2023, said the latest report.

The depression might intensify while moving nearly northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal and turn into a cyclone. If formed, the cyclone will be named Mocha.

However, IMD has not clarified any details about its path and intensification yet. Details of its path and intensification will be provided after the formation of low-pressure area.

The IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra informed that where the storm will go, and how intense it will be is yet to be estimated. This will be clear after the formation of low-pressure area on May 07, 2023. Currently there is no warning for Odisha. Rain, and wind warning has not been issued for Odisha coast. So people should not worry.

The IMD further added that the system is under watch and is being monitored on a regular basis to know its path and intensity. The fishermen have been warned not to go towards the Northeast Bay of Bengal from the 7th.

Windy’s European ECMWF model shows that the cyclone mocha will make landfall on the 12th of May and will make landfall off the coast of Myanmar.

Similarly, the American GFS model shows that the cyclone may hit the coast of Bangladesh. After the precipitation is formed, its course will be clear
