Asian Para Games: Odisha’s Jayanti Behera bags bronze in Women’s 200m sprint

Bhubaneswar: Bringing pride to the state Odia para athlete Jayanti Behera clinched bronze medal for India in the women’s 200 m sprint event at Asian Para Games at GBK main stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia on Tuesday.

Behera bagged the bronze in the women’s 200m T45/46/47 event which is for athletes with limb impairment. She clocked a timing of 27.45 seconds to finish the race. China’s Li Lu with 25.82 seconds and Wang Yanping with 26.45 seconds grabbed the first and the second positions in the same event.

A gold medallist in China Open Para Athletic Grand Prix Championship held in May, last year, Behera has also bagged silver medal in 100-meter race at the Asian Youth Para Games-2017 in Dubai. Later she topped in 400-metre event at the World Junior Para Athletic Championships held in Nottwil, Switzerland in August in the same year to bring home gold.

Born in Sakhigopal in 1999, Behera suffered burn injury on her left hand and waist at the age of 1. However, she managed to become a successful athlete by fighting against all odds.
