8-year-old girl rescued by Childline in capital city of Odisha

Bhubaneswar: An eight-year-old girl child was rescued by Childline, Bhubaneswar on Tuesday evening. The child belongs to a village under Jasipur police limits of Mayurbhanj district.

Reportedly, her parents are working as daily laborers and belong to a tribal Community. Due to the Covid pandemic, they were unable to earn money and hence it became difficult for them to arrange food for four children.

Thereafter, a nurse of a private hospital approached her parents to send the minor girl to work at her house as a babysitter and to help her in household chores at Nandan Vihar in Bhubaneswar.

As a result, being a victim of acute poverty and pandemic she was trafficked to Bhubaneswar for Rs 2000 per month. The minor has been working with the nurse for the last six months and her wage is sent to her mother by the employer.

The minor looked after the nurse’s one and half-year-old baby. More often she was physically abused by the employer. The minor escaped from her home at about 3.30 p.m on Tuesday afternoon as she was again physically abused by the nurse.

Some people rescued her from the road and immediately informed the Childline following which they handed over the child at Infocity Police station.

The Childline received the child from Infocity Police station later in the evening. A probe into the matter is underway.
