World Cup: Rohit Sharma, KL Raul centuries power India to thrash Sri Lanka

Leeds: Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul hit brilliant centuries as India defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the ICC World Cup 2019 at Headingley here on Saturday.

With this victory, India moved to the top of the World Cup 2019 points table.

Chasing the victory target of 265, Rohit Sharma (103) and KL Rahul (111) made a solid opening partnership forging a 189-runs stand, the highest by any team in the World Cup 2019.

With his splendid ton, Sharma also became the first batsman to score five centuries at a single World Cup. He reached his century off 92 balls with 14 fours and two sixes.

Skipper Virat Kohli (34) and Hardik Pandya (7) remained unbeaten to take the team through in 43.3 overs.

Earlier electing to bat first, Sri Lanka scored 264 for 7 in the stipulated 50 overs.

Angelo Mathews top-scored 113 from 128balls, while Lahiru Thirimanne made 53 runs. The duo put on 124 runs for the fifth wicket to give Sri Lanka a respectable total after they were reeling at 55-4.

For India, Jasprit Bumrah scalped three wickets, while Bhubaneswar Kumar, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav took one wicket each.
