R Ashwin open up about his cricket journey, Sites sacrifices, hard work, and self-discovery

R Ashwin has revealed about his cricket journey, emphasizing the sacrifices and hard work he did to be successful in the field.

In a candid conversation with former India women coach WV Raman, veteran Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin reflected on his career, emphasizing the sacrifices and hard work he invested to overcome the perception of not being the most athletic player on the field. Ashwin, now 36, has not only defied stereotypes but also emerged as India’s second-highest Test wicket-taker, showcasing his longevity and commitment to the game.

Ashwin acknowledged that his journey differs from that of Virat Kohli, the epitome of athleticism in Indian cricket. Despite not being naturally athletic, Ashwin embraced the challenges, dedicating himself to fitness routines and altering his lifestyle. He disclosed that he had made sacrifices in terms of food and lifestyle choices but viewed them as necessary steps to stay relevant in the modern-day game.

“I have sacrificed my food, I have sacrificed my lifestyle, I train doubly harder, and yet I could never be a Virat Kohli. And that is something I’ve made peace with because that is his journey, and this is my journey,” Ashwin expressed.

The off-spinner, with 489 wickets and numerous records to his name, has consistently prioritized the team’s needs over personal accomplishments. Despite facing challenges and occasionally sitting out crucial matches, Ashwin has carved out a niche for himself, proving indispensable in home Test matches.

Reflecting on his approach, Ashwin highlighted that not being naturally athletic had been a tag throughout his life, but it never hindered his dedication and hard work. He emphasized that staying relevant and showcasing his skills on the ground had always been his primary focus.

“For me, not being naturally athletic is something that stuck as a tag with me all through my life, but it’s never stopped me from working hard on it and staying relevant. For me, staying relevant, to be able to put myself on the ground and exhibit my skill, has been at the forefront. I have never really seen it as a sacrifice. Instead, it’s been an absolute journey of pleasure and joy,” he added.
