Woman with 1.5-year-old son sits on dharna for 23 days, demands wife’s status
A woman along with her 1.5-year-old son has sat on dharna for the last 23 days with the aim to press her demand of wife’s status at Baincha village of Basudevpur of Bhadrak district.

One Deeparani of Bodhapur village under Tihidi block reportedly had a love marriage with one Akshaya Kumar Behera in 2018 and a son was born to them in 2021. However, Akshaya’s family members did not accept Deeparani as his wife.
Akshaya’s family members allegedly tortured Deeparani over dowry and planned to arrange his mirage elsewhere claiming that she belong to a lower caste. They even allegedly attempted to kill her on November 20. However, some neighbours rescued her and admitted her at the local hospital.
When Deeparani reached Akshaya’s house after being discharged from the hospital, to her surprise she found out that the entire family members had fled elsewhere by locking the house.
Finding no way source of solace, Deeparani staged a sit-in infront of Akshaya’s locked house with her one and half year old son. She demanded to be accepted as Akshaya’s wife legally. It is being 23 days that she is on the dharna amid the ongoing severe cold wave condition. However, she is yet to get any response from Akshaya and his family members.
