Widow burnt alive for asking to repay loan in Odisha

Kendrapara: In a heart-wrenching incident, a 32-year-old widow was allegedly burnt alive by a neighbouring family in Odisha’s Kendrapara district after she asked a youth to pay back a loan of Rs 50,000 which she had lent him.

The incident occurred in Dhaniapada village under Marshaghai police limits in the district.

The deceased has been identified as Subhadra Khatei, wife of late Bigyan Behera of the village. She is survived by their 8-year old son.

According to reports, Subhadra had given Rs 50,000 to one Biswajit Swain, her neighbour in the village, as loan. The woman went to his house last night and asked him to repay the amount of money, which led to a verbal spat between them.

Later, Biswajit and his family members allegedly poured kerosene on Subhadra and set her on fire.

Hearing her cries, villagers rescued Subhadra in a critical condition and rushed her to the District Headquarters Hospital here. She was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as her condition was deteriorated.

Subhadra succumbed to burn injuries while undergoing treatment at the SCB hospital.

Meanwhile, Marshaghai police registered a case and began further investigation in this connection.

“The accused and his family members are at large. Investigation is underway and a man haunt has been launched to nab the accused”, police said.
